The day has been observed since 2003, based on the recommendations of the High-Level Committee on the Indian Diaspora chaired by L. M. Singhvi. The date was chosen because Mahatma Gandhi returned to India from South Africa on 9 January 1915, marking the beginning of his active role in India’s freedom struggle.
The theme for Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas 2026 focuses on Global Outreach and the role of the diaspora in strengthening India’s soft power. It highlights the importance of diaspora engagement in host countries, global partnerships, and the contribution of overseas Indians towards building a developed and inclusive India, with special attention to innovation, youth involvement, and cultural links.
Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas is important as it acknowledges the achievements of overseas Indians, encourages their participation in national development, enhances India’s soft power, and addresses diaspora-related concerns while promoting a sense of unity among Indians across the world.
